Kava Seizure – Darwin and Katherine

Drug Squad detectives have arrested a 64-year-old man following a large kava seizure.

Superintendent Tony Fuller from the Drug and Organised Crime Division said Police apprehended the male on the Stuart Highway, 10 kilometres north of Katherine at 7:30am.

“Upon searching the vehicle Police located approximately 10 kilograms of kava divided into 160 deal bags.

“As a result of the find, Police conducted a search warrant at a Trower Road residence and a further 50 kilograms of kava was located, along with $17,000 in cash.

“Police will allege that the male was travelling to an East Arnhem community to sell the kava when he was arrested.

“If sold in remote communities, the total kava haul is expected to fetch up $100,000.”

The male is in custody assisting Police with enquires.
