Kava Seized - Katherine

Northern Territory Police have arrested and charged a male and female following a large Kava seizure in Katherine yesterday.

Detective Sergeant Ian Kennon from the Northern Substance Abuse Intelligence Desk said just before 1:00am Police pulled over an unregistered Mitsubishi Pajero observed traveling along the Stuart Highway with four unrestrained children in the back.

“Upon search of the vehicle members located approximately 20 kilograms of kava divided into 862 deal bags and a small quantity of cannabis.

“A 39-year-old male and a 26-year-old female were arrested and conveyed to Katherine Watch House.”

They were charged with:

  • Possess traffickable quantity of Kava
  • Supply traffickable quantity of Kava
  • Possess cannabis in public place

Further the male driver was also charged with:

  • Drive an unregistered motor vehicle
  • Drive an unsafe motor vehicle
  • Driver fail to ensure young person restrained (x4)
  • Disorderly behaviour

They will appear in Katherine Magistrates Court today.
