Northern Territory Police have arrested two males and a female following a kava seizure in Katherine.
Detective Sergeant Ian Kennon said around 3:00 am on Monday, Police pulled over a silver Toyota Land Cruiser wagon on the Stuart Highway, approximately 2 kms north of Katherine.
“With the assistance of Drug Detection Dog Archie Police searched the vehicle and located a suitcase containing 18.5 kilograms of kava divided into clip seal bags, and a small quantity of cannabis.”
The 36-year-old female driver was charged with:
- Possess kava – traffickable quantity
- Supply kava
- Possess cannabis in a public place
- Learner driver – no licensed passenger in front seat
- Fail to display “L” plates
Her 41-year-old male passenger was also arrested and charged with:
- Possess kava – traffickable quantity
- Supply kava
They will appear in Ramingining Court on 2 September 2015.
“The following morning under the Northern Territory Kava Management Act, Darwin Drug Squad Police searched a property in Nightcliff and arrested a 38-year-old Darwin man,” said Detective Sergeant Kennon.
“Police will allege the trio were involved in a joint syndicate distributing kava to remote communities in the Territory.”
He will appear in Darwin Magistrates Court on 9 June charged with possess and supply a traffickable quantity of kava.
