International Volunteers Day

Police

THE Northern Territory Police, Fire and Emergency Services invites the community to join in honouring volunteers across the Territory on International Volunteers Day tomorrow, December 5.

More than 1600 men and women volunteer in the Territory in the NT Emergency Services, Bushfires NT and the NT Fire and Rescue Service. 2015 also marks 40 years of NTES.

NTES Director Andrew Warton said International Volunteers Day “provided an opportunity to recognise the social and economic contribution that volunteers make across the world.

“More than 90 per cent of our organisation comprises volunteers,” he said. “The contribution our NTES volunteers make to the lives of Territorians can only be described as unequivocally essential.

“We have volunteers who despite maintaining employment, family and other responsibilities, still find the time to attend emergency service training and respond to all manner of emergencies.”

Mr Warton said although the 'vollies' are well-trained and prepared for any situation, they’re always on the lookout for more members to join the team.

“Volunteers give their time and energy with nothing expected in return, they volunteer for the love of their communities, and are committed to keeping people well-prepared and resilient against natural disasters,” he said.

“On this International Volunteer Day in 2015, we extend our sincere thanks to Territorian volunteers who serve in the NT Emergency Service, NT Fire and Rescue Service and Bushfires NT.

“It is also the time to recognise the dedicated work of all volunteers across the Territory and beyond. The work you do impacts people’s lives and is therefore priceless.”
