Group flown to safety as floodwaters rise – Timber Creek

Police

Timber Creek Police have assisted in the rescue of seven people stranded following flooding in the region.

Superintendent Stephen Heyworth from Katherine Police said a patrol from Timber Creek was flagged down by a 59-year-old male who had walked 40 kilometres to raise the alarm.

“He had left the party to find help after their car had become bogged and was able to flag down a Police vehicle on the Victoria Highway.

“The seven people left with the vehicle were women and children aged between two and 51, including one woman who was pregnant.

“Although the party had plenty of water, food was going to be an issue.

Superintendent Heyworth said a helicopter was used to transport the remaining people to Timber Creek.

“Although this incident has ended safely we urge travellers in the region to exercise extreme caution at this time.

“Rainfall has affected many access roads to communities with water up to two metres over some roads.

“If you have to travel make sure you have plenty of food and water and be prepared to wait until floodwaters subside before attempting to cross.

“If you are unsure do not attempt to cross a flooded roadway.

“Please ensure you let someone know where you are going and when you plan to return,” Superintendent Heyworth said.
