Flooding – Daly River and Katherine regions – Update #2

Police

The Daly River has reached major flood level and the evacuation of the community is continuing today as waters continue to rise in the region.

“With the help of several commercial helicopter companies, we hope to get everyone out of Naiuyu today,” Region 2 Controller Commander Bruce Porter said.

“We ask that at this time the privacy of the evacuees is respected and that they are allowed time to settle into their temporary accommodation.”

A minor flood warning continues for the Katherine River at Gorge Road as the tropical low continues to produce heavy rains in the catchment area. The river is still below the minor flood level.

“There is no current threat of flooding to Katherine township,” Commander Porter said.

“That said, there are some very wet roads out there and water levels can change very quickly. Weather and road conditions in the Top End continue to be wet and motorists are advised to take extra precautions on the road and to use extreme cautions when driving in flooded areas. I urge everyone to consider their travel plans and check the road report website through Secure NT before they set out to drive anywhere. We had several reports yesterday of stranded motorists in the region and the last thing we want is for anyone to become an unnecessary statistic. Your safety is our priority.”

Water levels across the Arnhem and Carpentaria districts are being closely monitored, including the Waterhouse and McArthur Rivers.

A cyclone watch remains in place for the area extending from Port Roper to the Queensland border.

Police and NT Emergency Services continue to search for the 28-year-old man who went missing in floodwaters near Peppimenarti on Friday afternoon.

For assistance, call the Police Assistance Line 131 444 or 000 in an emergency. NTES Emergency Assistance line is 132 500.
