Flooding – Daly River and Katherine regions – Update #1

Police

The Daly River has reached Major flood level and the evacuation of the community is underway.

“Earlier today an evacuation order was issued for the community of just over 400 people,” Region 2 Controller Commander Bruce Porter said.

“Evacuations are being carried out in two stages – first by airlift to Batchelor and then by bus to Darwin, where the evacuees will be accommodated in the Foskey Pavilion at the Royal Darwin Showgrounds.”

The first helicopters arrived in Batchelor around 2pm and the first bus of evacuees arrived in Darwin around 4pm.

“Unfortunately the whole community cannot be evacuated today. Those who remain are staying on higher ground tonight and the evacuation will be completed tomorrow.”

A minor flood warning continues for the Katherine River at Gorge Road as the tropical low continues to produce heavy rains in the catchment area.

“We ask that at this time the privacy of the evacuees is respected and that they are allowed time to settle into their temporary accommodation,” Commander Porter said.

Weather and road conditions in the Top End continue to be wet and motorists are advised to take extra precautions on the road and to use extreme cautions when driving in flooded areas.

There is as yet no sign of the 28-year-old man who went missing in floodwaters near Peppimenarti yesterday afternoon.
