Police

The Bureau of Meteorology has advised that the level of the Waterhouse River at Beswick Bridge has now eased below the minor flood warning level.

Flood WATCH – Arnhem and North West Coastal Rivers

The Bureau of Meteorology has advised that the level of the Waterhouse River at Beswick Bridge has now eased below the minor flood warning level.

Commander Bruce Porter APM, Region 2 Controller, said authorities are continuing to monitor the rainfall and river levels in catchment areas but that the flood situation was currently easing at Beswick and surrounding areas, although several roads remain closed and motorists should exercise caution when travelling.

“Those people evacuated to the school from the aged care facility in Beswick have been returning home this morning and people have been able to return to their homes that suffered some flooding in the low-lying areas.

“At Beswick Bridge, the Waterhouse River is currently at 7.1 metres and the bridge has approximately 1.4 metres of water over it. However, the predictions are that the level of the Waterhouse River will continue to fall during the day and that the bridge should be clear of water by around 6.00pm this evening.

River levels at Diljin Hill peaked yesterday at 3.4 metres but have now retreated to 2.6 metres and continue to fall.

A flood watch remains in place for the Arnhem and North West Coastal Rivers. Rain is forecast today in parts of the Daly, Gregory and western Carpentaria.

Catchments likely to be affected include the Daly River.

“Residents are advised to exercise caution if driving and to drive to the conditions.

“Do not attempt to cross flooded waterways unless you are sure of the depth and speed of the water.

“Stay away from flooded drains, rivers, streams and waterways and stop children playing in or near floodwaters.

“Stay away from fallen power lines, they are dangerous and should always be treated as live.

“Please ensure your emergency flood preparations have commenced and continue to listen to your local radio and/or television stations for further information and warnings,” Commander Porter said.
