Flood WATCH - Arnhem, Carpentaria and North West Coastal Rivers

Bureau of Meteorology advises heavy rainfall has been recorded across the upper Waterhouse River catchment today and is expected to result in rises overnight to the minor flood level at Beswick Bridge. With further heavy rainfall forecast during this evening, it is possible that higher levels may be attained.

Commander Bruce Porter, Region 2 Controller advises the Local Emergency Management Committee at Maranboy has activated the Local Flood Plan and preparations are well underway.

A flood WATCH is current for Arnhem, Carpentaria and North West Coastal Rivers.

Bureau of Meteorology advised of rain with heavy falls forecast in the Arnhem, western Carpentaria and eastern Daly District, extending southwest into the remainder of the Daly and Gregory Districts today and tomorrow. These falls are expected to lead to strong stream rises which may affect road access at times. Some communities may become isolated. Catchments likely to be affected include the Waterhouse and tributaries of the Daly, including the Katherine River.

“We are monitoring the rainfall and river levels in catchment areas and if necessary will further activate the plans.

“Residents in those areas are advised to exercise caution if driving and to drive to the conditions.

“Do not attempt to cross flooded waterways unless you are sure of the depth and speed of the water.

“Stay away from flooded drains, rivers, streams and waterways and stop children playing in or near floodwaters

“Stay away from fallen power lines, they are dangerous and should always be treated as live.

“Please ensure your emergency flood preparations have commenced and continue to listen to your local radio and/or television stations for further information and warnings,” Commander Porter said.
