Ex-Tropical Cyclone Lam - Update #15

Police

Commander Bruce Porter APM, Region 2 Regional Controller, has advised that post impact assessments are underway in all four major communities impacted by ex-Tropical Cyclone Lam – Galiwinku, Ramingining, Milingimbi and Gapuwiyak.

These four communities, together with Mapuru Outstation, are in the State of Emergency area and post impact assessments should be completed by tomorrow evening, Sunday 22 February 2015.

The focus of operations has now transitioned to short term recovery (the restoration of essential services) prior to longer-term recovery efforts at rebuilding the impacted communities. The focus of authorities is now on making communities safe and habitable.

Warruwi

As advised previously, it has been deemed safe for members of the Warruwi community to return home and that process is currently underway with 80 returned home today.

Galiwinku

The barge landing area was operational today and received a barge carrying supplies of food, water and other items.

The latest available information is that 6 houses have been destroyed, 10 houses have suffered severe damage, 50 have minor roof damage, and 80 have moderate to extensive roof damage.

The majority of the sewer system is operational and the high voltage power system should be restored by this evening and the majority of residences should have power restored by Sunday evening, although it will take longer in the harder impacted beach area.

Ramingining

There are no significant issues in terms of damage to infrastructure and low level pressure water supply has been restored.  People are reminded of the precautionary advice to boil water prior to drinking. The high voltage power supply is expected to be restored this evening although there has been significant damage to the low voltage power system.  The barge landing has not been accessible for assessment as yet.

Milingimbi

It is anticipated the barge will be operational in time for the next scheduled barge landing on Tuesday 24 February.  There are no issues relating to food supplies.

There are currently no significant issues relating to infrastructure damage with high voltage power to be restored this evening although it will take longer to restore the low voltage and house power supplies.

Gapuwiyak

Power is on to all the community with the exception of the Police housing as a tree brought down lines, and the water supply is fully functional.
