Drugs, Firearm Seized - Palmerston

A 26-year-old man has been arrested and charged with drug and firearm offences after coming to the attention of Police through some erratic driving on the streets of Palmerston yesterday afternoon.

 Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Annette Cooper said the man, driving a Suzuki Swift, overtook an unmarked Police vehicle on the left hand side of the road.

“Police ordered the vehicle to stop however the driver failed to obey and continued on.

“Other units observed the vehicle a short time later driving in a dangerous manner before it left the road and headed into bushland behind the suburb of Moulden.

“The vehicle then become stuck in a wash out where Police have taken the male driver and a passenger into custody.”

Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Cooper said Police searched the vehicle and allegedly discovered 3.5 grams of methamphetamine, a sawn-off shotgun, ammunition and a quantity of cash.

“Obviously it is very concerning to Police that this individual was not only driving in a dangerous manner and putting other road users at serious risk, to be also carrying a highly illegal firearm and drugs is a trifecta of worrying behaviour.  We are very happy to have this person and these items off the street.”

The man was charged with possess and supply a traffickable quantity of methamphetamine, possess a prohibited firearm, possess a firearm without a licence and drive in a manner dangerous.

He was remanded in custody to appear in the Darwin Magistrates Court today.
