Northern Territory Police are attending an incident at an outstation on Elcho Island in which an 11-year-old boy has died.

Initial reports have the boy participating in a school sports carnival when he was run over by a four-wheel-drive vehicle.

Police and health staff from Galiwinku are en route to the scene.

Police will assess the scene and prepare a report for the Coroner.
