Cyclone Lam - Update #5

Police

The Bureau of Meteorology has advised Cyclone Lam is producing gale force winds across the Gove peninsula as it approaches the North East Top End.

A cyclone WARNING is in effect from and island communities from Goulburn Island to Cape Shield, including Nhulunbuy. A Cyclone WATCH continues for coastal areas from Croker Island to Goulburn Island and Cape Shield to Port Roper, including Groote Eylandt and Bulman.

Tropical Cyclone Lam is expected to continue slowly intensifying as it moves westward overnight, parallel to the coast before turning towards southwest on Thursday.

Commander Bruce Porter, Regional Controller of Region 2 said Local Emergency Management Plans have been activated and authorities are well prepared.

“For residents under cyclone WARNING, your emergency plans should be activated.

“Residents of Nhulunbuy, Elcho Island and Gapuwiyak, if you DO NOT have accommodation constructed to the Building Code or are unsure of your present accommodation you should decide which public emergency shelter to use and MAY PROCEED to that shelter. You should now have your emergency kit complete and ready and take with you.

“For those communities under cyclone WATCH, now is the time to put together your emergency kit, clear your yards and commence home shelter preparations. Fill any water containers you may have (you should have at least 3 litres of water per person per day for at least 72 hours) and fill your vehicles' fuel tanks. Do not proceed to public emergency shelters until advised to do so.

“If you do not have accommodation constructed to the building code or are unsure of your present accommodation you should determine now where to shelter. This may include arranging to shelter with family, friends, or in public emergency shelters or strong buildings that are available in your community.

“Tune in to your local radio and/or television stations for further information and warnings,” said Commander Porter.
