The Cross Border Team arrested a 56-year-old man yesterday for possession of cannabis.
NT Police in cooperation with South Australian Organised Crime working on Operation Marlin, received information that the man was travelling from Adelaide with a large quantity of cannabis bound for the Northern Territory.
Detective Sergeant Andrew Bedwell said that Police apprehended the man driving a Smart Car, south of Tennant Creek yesterday.
“On Tuesday 10 November 2015, Cross Border Team detectives and intelligence members began surveillance operations.
“At about 4:15pm on Wednesday 11 November, investigators intercepted the man just south of Tennant Creek.
“The vehicle was subject to a search and just over four kilograms of cannabis was located in nine separate vacuum sealed bags.
The man was arrested and charged with possess and supply cannabis.
He is remanded in custody to appear before the Tennant Creek Magistrates court on Thursday 12 November 2015.
“The cannabis seized was destined for Tennant Creek and Barkly communities and had the potential to yield a potential cash return of approximately $63,000 if sold by the pound. This figure would be significantly larger if sold in smaller amounts,” said Andy Bedwell.
“This is another great result for the Cross Border Team and we will continue to work with the SA and WA Police to reduce the transport of illicit substances into the tri-border area.”
