Angurugu Deaths Appeal for Assistance

Northern Territory Police are investigating a violent disturbance which occurred late on Friday afternoon in the township of Angurugu on Groote Eylandt.

During the incident a number of weapons, including spears and machetes were used by the combatants. As a result two persons died from injuries and a third seriously injured. The injured man has since been evacuated to Darwin by Careflight. Two other community members were treated at the local clinic.

Extra police have arrived on the island including Crime Scene Examiners and five detectives from the Major Crime team to conduct an investigation into this tragic event.

Police are calling for any witnesses to contact Police either in person at the Alyangula Police Station (if a resident of Groote Eylandt) or by phoning Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.

Police are particularly interested in talking to anyone who may have taken footage of the event. Please contact Police urgently.

Extra Police including Detectives and General Duties Police will be travelling to the island this morning (Saturday).

Commander Tony Fuller said there will be a visibly heightened Police presence on Groote Eylandt during the coming week. "This is a very serious incident, and Police share the community's concern at this unnecessary tragedy.

"We will be working closely with the local community to understand exactly what happened, to calm the situation, and ensure the township returns to normal life as quickly as possible."
