Truck Driver Charged with Drug Offences

Katherine Police have assisted Drug and Organised Crime Detectives in the arrest a 47-year-old male truck driver in the town overnight.

Detective Superintendent Tony Fuller said Substance Abuse Intelligence Desk Detectives had been investigating the transportation of cannabis into the town.

“We are aware of allegations that cannabis and other drugs are allegedly being transported and supplied by some truck drivers for sale in remote communities, the arrests last night are the result of one investigation into these allegations.

“A Kenworth Prime Mover with two trailers was apprehended and a search of the road train has allegedly uncovered 3 kilograms of cannabis.”

The male has been charged with possess and supply a commercial quantity of cannabis.

He was remanded in custody to appear in the Katherine Magistrates Court this morning.

A 48-year-old man was also arrested and has been issued a notice to appear for the offence of attempting to possess a commercial quantity of cannabis.

He was bailed to appear at a later date.

Detective Superintendent Fuller said the seized drugs range in value from $30,000 to ten times that if sold in remote communities.

“Police have received information that a gram of cannabis can have a price tag of $200 in some areas.”
