Train v Car Crash - Katherine

Police

Police from the Northern Traffic Operations are investigating the circumstances leading to a north bound freight train striking a 4wd vehicle in Katherine this morning.

Commander Bruce Porter from Katherine Police said the incident occurred just after 1am.

“Initial investigations have determined a Toyota Hi Lux 4wd was attempting to traverse the railway tracks just west of the town.

“There is no rail crossing at this location and the vehicle has become stuck on the lines.

“Despite attempting to warn the oncoming train with torches, the fully loaded train was unable to stop in time and has crashed into the vehicle before dragging it approximately 500 metres.

“The vehicle and train have come to a stop just past to the high level bridge over the Katherine River.”

Commander Porter said there were no reports of injuries but one train driver was taken to Katherine Hospital as a precaution.

“The 1,000 metre long train is currently blocking Shadforth Road at the rail crossing and residents of rural properties along this access road are currently cut off until the train is able to be moved.

“At this stage engineers are inspecting any damage to the tracks, the train and the bridge and attempts to move the train are likely to occur later this morning.”

“Police are assisting Genesee & Wyoming personnel at the scene and will assist any likely investigation by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau.

“The 23-year-old male driver of the 4wd has been interviewed by Police.

“Detectives from the Northern Investigations Section will have carriage of any possible charges in regard to this incident.”

Commander Porter said this incident was a timely reminder to communities that have rail lines nearby to be aware of the hazards.

“It is very fortunate in this instance that no one was seriously injured or killed.

“Railway tracks should only be crossed at designated crossing areas and with extreme caution at all times when doing so.”
