Sexual Assault Public Assistance Sought - Nhulunbuy

Police are seeking public assistance in relation to a violent sexual assault that occurred in Nhulunbuy yesterday morning.

Detective Senior Sergeant David Richardson from the Northern Investigation Section said a 58-year-old woman was walking along Middle Beach at around 9:20am when she was approached by an unknown Aboriginal man.

“The woman followed the man a short distance from the beach towards the sand dunes. Police allege the man threatened the woman with a knife and sexually assaulted her.

“Despite preliminary investigations following a number of leads, Police now seek public assistance to identify the offender.

“He is described as being of Aboriginal appearance, stocky/muscular build, approximately 172cm tall, aged in his 50’s, short dark hair, possibly with specks of grey through it and stubble on his face. He was missing his top front row of teeth and wearing a red t-shirt and brown khaki cargo shorts.”

Police urge anyone who may have information in relation to this incident, particularly anyone who may have been in the vicinity between 9 and 10am yesterday, to contact Police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
