Public assistance required - Fireworks incident - Vesteys Beach

Northern Territory Police are seeking information from the public in relation to a serious incident involving a firecracker at the northern end of Vesteys Beach.

Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Karl Day said a 46-year-old man was injured when he attempted to remove a firecracker that had landed near him.

“The man was with a family group cooking dinner on a public barbecue at about half-past-six yesterday afternoon when a lit firecracker was thrown from a moving vehicle into the centre of the group.

“The man has attempted to throw the firecracker clear but it exploded in his hand.”

Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Day said the man received serious injuries.

“St John Ambulance staff treated the man at the scene before transporting him to Royal Darwin Hospital where he remains in a stable condition.

“Investigations into the incident are ongoing and Police are requesting public assistance in finding the vehicle and person or persons responsible.

“Anyone who may have witnessed this incident or any similar incident involving fireworks being thrown from vehicles yesterday evening are urged to contact Police on 131 444 or call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

“We are also appealing to the people responsible to come forward to Police.

“This behaviour can only be described as moronic and they would be well advised to hand themselves in before they are arrested.”
