Online Fraud Warning – Katherine/Darwin

Police

Territorians are being urged to use extreme caution following a number of recent fraudulent online transactions claiming to be linked to an address in Katherine.

Senior Sergeant Antony Deutrom said a number of people from Darwin have contacted Police stating they have responded to an online advertisement which claims to offer both accommodation and work as a fruit picker in Katherine.

“The ads featured in an online classified website and required payment of one weeks’ accommodation upfront. Once the unsuspecting victims transfer the funds, the account holder ceases contact and seemingly disappears.

“These people have lost between $80 and $220 in a single transaction and we urge members of the public to be vigilant with this type of behaviour.

“Be cautious when responding to posts online and always do your research before transferring any funds to unknown people.

“Often the offenders are interstate and have no links whatsoever to the Northern Territory.”

Police urge anyone who has been a victim of similar scams to contact them on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
