Moderate Flood Warning - Daly River - Update #2

Police

A moderate flood warning remains in place for the Daly River.

The Bureau of Meteorology advises the water level is continuing to rise and is expected to exceed the Moderate Flood Level (13.1metres) early Wednesday, and reach 13.5 metres during Thursday.

Commander David Proctor, Regional Controller of the Region 2 Emergency Management Committee said the Regional Emergency Management Committee reconvened today, Local Emergency Management Plans have been activated and authorities are well prepared.

“Daly River Road at Backyard Creek and at the Reynolds River Causeway is currently impassable due to flooding.

“At this stage schools and local businesses in the area remain open.

The Local Emergency Management Committee met again this afternoon and will continue to monitor the situation.

“NT Police urge drivers to carefully consider their options before trying to cross any flooded roadways. Trying to predict the water depth or not being able to see if the road is still intact could have fatal consequences.

“Motorists are advised to check the Road Report prior to travelling at www.roadreport.nt.gov.au or via telephone 1800 246 199.

“With the rising water levels it is important that the public realise the risks associated with rivers and creeks. Flood waters pose a real threat of drowning; people should not swim in pipes or drains. There is also a chance that flood waters may be contaminated by sewerage outflow or hidden debris.

“With the rising water levels, it is important to be alert to the fact that crocodiles may be on the move and to be crocwise.” said Commander Proctor.
