Fraud Arrest - Darwin

Police

Police from the Major Fraud Squad have arrested a 37-year-old female in relation to the alleged use of cheques to obtain benefit by criminal deception.

Detective Acting Superintendent Lee Morgan said the woman had been targeting a wide range of victims.

“Police will allege the woman had been buying goods with cheques then returning the goods in exchange for cash.

“She is also alleged to have been exchanging cheques for cash, targeting individuals and small businesses with false stories of hardship.”

“At this stage of the investigation Police believe the woman has obtained in excess of $50,000 in the past few months.”

Detective Acting Superintendent Morgan said several victims had come forward to Police and an extensive investigation by the Major Fraud Squad resulted in the arrest this morning.

“Police believe there may be further victims who may be currently unaware they have been targeted.

“We are asking anyone who thinks they may have been a victim of this deception to contact the Police Assistance Line on 131 444.

“Police warn all businesses to be vigilant and security conscious when accepting cheques and report any excessive returning of goods for cash.”

The woman has been charged with criminal deception and passing valueless cheques.

She has been bailed to appear in the Darwin Magistrates Court at a later date.
