Fatal House Fire - The Narrows - Update #1

Police

Police and Fire and Rescue Investigators are continuing to investigate a structure fire which claimed the life of an infant in The Narrows yesterday.

Detective Senior Sergeant Tony Henrys from the Major Crime Squad said initial indications suggest the fire was a tragic accident.

“Police, Fire and Rescue and St John Ambulance members attended the location at around 3:15pm, however despite the best efforts of the Emergency Services and the neighbours, the little girl, who was in an upstairs bedroom at the time, was declared deceased at the scene,” Detective Senior Sergeant Henrys said.

The 33-year-old father and four other children were conveyed to Royal Darwin Hospital. The children were released yesterday however the man remains in a stable condition.

“This is a tragic accident and our thoughts go out to the friends and family of the little girl.

“We urge all Territorians, especially those with children to educate your kids about the dangers of fire. Smoke alarms and evacuation plans can also assist greatly in the event of an emergency.”

No further information will be provided at this time as this incident is now a matter for the Coroner.
