Fatal Crash – Stuarts Well

The road toll now stands at 33 following a fatal single vehicle crash early this morning near Stuarts Well, approximately 90km south of Alice Springs.

Southern Watch Commander, Senior Sergeant Virginia Read said the vehicle crashed as it travelled across the Hugh River Bridge.

"Police were alerted to the incident at around 3:00am. Members attended and located an occupant of the vehicle deceased at the scene.

"Major Crash Investigators are in attendance and have blocked the southbound lane of the Stuart Highway as investigations into the exact circumstances surrounding the crash continue.

"Traffic is likely to be affected for the next three hours and Police urge road users to avoid the area if possible," Senior Sergeant Read said.

Police will prepare a report for the Coroner.

The road toll for the same time last year was 31.
