Extortion Charges - Darwin

Police

Serious Crime Detectives have charged a 28-year-old man with blackmail and extortion.

Detective Senior Sergeant Karl Day said Police were notified by the victims late last week

“A 24-year-old female and a 24-year-old male confirmed to Police the 28-year-old man had assisted them with drafting resumes and organising job interviews in return for payment.

“They then allege the man demanded further money a month after the 24-year-old female had found employment.

“Serious Crime Detectives investigated the allegations and the 28-year-old was charged yesterday.”

Detective Senior Sergeant Day said it was a timely reminder for Territorians to be wary of online sites and think before you act.

"Scammers are criminals.  If you have paid money in similar circumstances report it to Police on 131 444, or call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000."

The man was granted conditional bail to appear in the Darwin Magistrates Court on May 27.
