Darwin River Dam - Spillway

Police

Darwin River Dam has reached capacity and the spillway is expected to flow in the next 48 hours should monsoonal activity continue.

Northern Territory Emergency Service Director Tom Konieczny said this was a normal and regular occurrence during an above average wet season.

“As the Dam approaches this level, residents in the area should be aware that any overflow creates higher river levels downstream.

“Residents in low-lying areas of the Darwin River area, including Darwin River Road, Reedbeds Road, Old Bynoe Road, Cox Penninsula Road, Mira Road, Blackmore River, Darwin River, and surrounding areas should be aware local flooding may occur.”

Director of the Northern Territory Emergency Service has asked that residents prepare their homes in accordance with their Household Emergency Plans.

“The NTPFES Website has a template for an Emergency Household Plan.  I encourage residents in the affected area to consider completing a plan to ensure all members of their household are prepared and know exactly what to do if an emergency situation arises.

“Authorities are currently assessing the high risk areas for flooding and will continue to monitor the situation,” concluded NTES Director Tom Konieczny.
