Cyclone Watch - Borroloola - Elcho Island

Bureau of Meteorology has advised a cyclone watch remains in place for coastal areas from Port MacArthur to Elcho Island.

BOM has advised Ex-Tropical Cyclone Gillian is moving slowly west over the southern Gulf of Carpentaria. The system is expected to continue moving west throughout the day and move north-westwards across the Gulf of Carpentaria and towards the northeast Arnhem district during Friday and Saturday.

Commander Bruce Porter, Regional Controller of the Region 2 Emergency Management Committee said the Regional Emergency Management Committee reconvened today. Local Emergency Management Plans have been activated and authorities are well prepared.

“The local Emergency Management Committee is well prepared, and authorities are continuing to monitor the situation.

“Residents should have their emergency kits together, clear your yards and balconies, and commence home shelter preparations.

“Check that your friends, family and neighbours have heard and understood the messages, particularly new arrivals or those who may not fully understand English.
