Cahills Crossing Vehicle Incidents

Police

Police are urging all motorists to avoid flooded roads and crossings after Oenpelli Police assisted in the recovery of five vehicles from Cahills Crossing in the last week.

Superintendent Craig Barrett from the Arafura Division said the most recent incident occurred on Monday when a Nissan Navara was swept off the crossing.

“The driver and his three passengers spent the night in their flooded vehicle due to the threat of crocodiles.

“Cahills Crossing is notorious for crocodiles and one measuring three metres was seen hanging around the most recently submerged vehicle.

“Early Tuesday morning the group left the vehicle but were swept off the crossing again. Fortunately the group were able to make their way back to the crossing and notified Police who attended the scene and recovered the vehicle.

Police recovered a second vehicle from the same location a short time later after the diver attempted to cross the river and was also swept off the crossing.

“The force of the water after rain should not be underestimated, just because you could cross the river at 700ml last week, doesn’t mean you can the following week,” Superintendent Barrett said.

“Trying to predict the water depth or not being able to see if the road is still intact could have fatal consequences.”

Police urge all Territorians and visitors to pay attention to road signs, check water depths and not to cross flooded creeks and causeways.
