Traffic Operation Nabs ‘Hoon’ – Howard Springs

Police

Police targeting traffic offenders in the rural area last night apprehended an 18-year-old man travelling at more than double the speed limit in Howard Springs.

Senior Sergeant Kerry James of the Darwin Traffic Operations Section said as part of the anti-hooning legislation, the man was apprehended on Whitewood Road after he was witnessed street racing and reaching speeds of up to 148km in a 70km zone.

“He received a Notice to Appear in court and had his Holden Commodore seized. This kind of senseless behaviour can and does have tragic consequences,” Senior Sergeant James said.

“Police will be out in force in the rural area as part of an on-going targeted traffic operation and have already tested 462 drivers and issued 12 Traffic Infringement Notices overnight.

“I urge would-be racers to think again before trying these acts as not only is it highly dangerous, your car will be seized and you will receive a fine and lose demerit points.

“In simple terms, it’s just not worth the risk to yourself and others.”
