Detectives from Strike Force Trident have charged a 19-year-old man in relation to a structure fire in The Narrows.

Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Stringer said the incident occurred at Wilmont Street at around 3pm on Wednesday.

“The alleged offender broke into a large shed and located a container of petrol. He was smoking a cigarette at the time which has caused the petrol to ignite. He received burns and remains in a stable condition at Royal Darwin Hospital.

“The shed was completely destroyed and the roof of an adjoining granny flat was also burnt.  The damage bill is expected to be between $50,000 and $100,000.

“The 19-year-old has been charged with arson, aggravated unlawful entry, stealing and damage property.”

He has been bailed to appear in Darwin Magistrates Court on 15 January 2014.
