Strike Force Vega Clear Over 400 Arrests - Alice Springs

Police

Detectives from Strike Force Vega continue to crack down on property related crime in Alice Springs making over 400 arrests during 2013.

Detective Acting Superintendent Peter Malley said there has been a significant reduction in the incidents of property related crime, particularly unlawful entries.

“Since February Police have made 431 arrests, cleared 1,801 offences and issued 134 summons.

Some of the arrests made by Strike Force Vega members this year include:

- Two males aged 16 and 18 arrested for a series of ram raids across Alice Springs in July.

- Two males aged 15 and 55 and a 22-year-old female arrested for unlawfully entering a residence in Gillen and stealing a motor vehicle in October.

- Two youths aged 14 and 17 arrested for unlawfully entering a service station on the North Stuart Highway and causing around $10,000 worth of property damage in November.

“Police have made a further four arrests this week including two males aged 16 and 17 for a range of property offences.

“The two offenders allegedly stole a quantity of alcohol from a residence in Desert Springs and stole a Nissan Pulsar on 23 December. The youths also allegedly stole a Kia Sportage from a residence on 25 December.

“Police recovered both vehicles and arrested the pair. They have been charged with a number of offences including aggravated unlawful entry, stealing and aggravated unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

“Police will continue to take a zero tolerance approach to this type of offending and are committed to reducing the incidents of property related crime.

“It only takes a moment for opportunistic thieves to take advantage of an unlocked door. It is important that everyone is vigilant and ensures their homes and vehicles are secure, windows and doors are locked and valuable items are stored in a safe place.

“Strike Force Vega will continue in 2014 and I urge the public to report any suspicious activity to Police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.”
