Remote Operation Targets Motorists

Police have breath tested more than 550 drivers and made two arrests during an operation targeting road safety and drug and alcohol trafficking in remote communities.

Detective Senior Sergeant Clint Sims said members from the Substance Abuse Intelligence Desk and the Dog Operation Unit conducted the three day operation following the wrap up of the Darwin Show.

“Random Breath Testing stations were situated on the Stuart Highway in Adelaide River and the Arnhem Highway in Jabiru between 29 and 31 July.

“During the operation 553 drivers were breath tested, Police arrested two people for medium and high range drink driving while a further two people have been summonsed for low range drink driving.

“Police also issued 10 Traffic Infringement Notices for not wearing seatbelts and speeding and nine people were summonsed for offences including driving an unregistered and uninsured motor vehicle and driving unlicensed.

“Police and Drug Detector Dogs screened 51 vehicles and located 407gms of cannabis. A total of $2,145 in cash was seized and 51 litres of liquor was tipped out.

“Four people have been summonsed for possession of a trafficable quantity of cannabis while a further 13 Drug Infringement Notices were issued by Police.”
