Police call for witnesses after rock throwing incidents

Police

Seven separate reported incidents of rocks being thrown at vehicles has Alice Springs Police deeply concerned that serious injury will result if attacks continue.

Superintendent Catherine Bennett said that between 7pm Saturday and 3am Sunday seven vehicles were targeted by rock throwers on Blain Street, Espie Street, Undoolya Road, North Stuart Highway, Stuart Highway, Larapinta Drive and Erumba Street

“This is completely mindless behaviour and Police are appalled that the offenders are not considering the possible result of their actions.

“In these cases we are extremely fortunate to have nothing more than broken windows and panel damage but a split second either way and we could have had a major, tragic incident to deal with.”

Superintendent Bennett said community members can assist Police and help avert a disaster by immediately reporting any rock throwing incident, suspicious behaviour near roads or information on possible offenders to Police.

“Police cannot be everywhere and we need public information to be able to catch these culprits in the act.”

Superintendent Bennett said Police will be conducting education courses at schools highlighting the dangers of throwing rocks at vehicles and providing public information on the rewards offered through Crime Stoppers.

“Reporting incidents to Crime Stoppers can make you eligible for a reward should information lead to a conviction.”  Superintendent Bennett said.

Anyone who may be the victim of a rock attack on the roads is urged to report the incident immediately to Police by calling the Police Assistance Line on 131 444.  Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
