Kava Offences – Two Men Charged

Police have charged two men for separate offences following the seizure of more than 40kg of kava.

Superintendent Tony Fuller of the Drug and Specialist Crime Division said Nhulunbuy Police attended the Gove Airport yesterday and conducted a search on the luggage of a 39-year-old local man.

“Nhulunbuy Police located 35kg of kava in 414 deal bags. The man was arrested and charged with possess commercial quantity of kava,” Superintendent Fuller said.

“If sold within the community, this had the potential street value of $35,000.”

Drug and Organised Crime Squad Detectives attended a Darwin post office and located five kilograms of kava, destined for the community of Milingimbi.

As a result of investigations, Police conducted a search at a Darwin residence yesterday and located the 58-year-old alleged offender and approximately one kilogram of kava.

The man was arrested and charged with possess trafficable quantity of kava (x2) and supplying kava (x2).

Both men received bail and will appear in court at a later date.
