Illegal Grog Sales - Katherine

Police

A 62-year-old Katherine man was arrested by Katherine Police on Friday night for selling liquor without a licence.

As part of ongoing investigations into the illegal sale of liquor after hours, Police observed two local residents purchase liquor from within a unit complex.

Superintendent Megan Rowe, Katherine Division, said that a search of the unit resulted in a large quantity of beer being seized.

“The male has been charged with Sell Liquor Without a Licence, an offence that carries stiff penalties with a maximum of 12 months imprisonment or a $35,250 fine,” said Superintendent Rowe.

“Katherine Police will continue to investigate reports of illegal liquor sales as part of the continued crack down on alcohol related offending.

“These blatant examples of unauthorised sales of liquor for inflated profit trade upon the misery, addiction and vulnerability of those who suffer dependency on alcohol and upon those who are least able to afford it.

“The ‘sly-grog’ trade has become highly prevalent and undermines the very regulatory framework of Liquor Licensing, Police and community efforts to reduce the harms associated with the supply of liquor to problem drinkers.

“The Public are reminded to "Say Something" by calling Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 if they have any information that may assist Police,” concluded Superintendent Rowe.

The 62-year-old man has been bailed to appear in the Katherine Magistrates Court at a later date.
