The NT road toll has risen to 26 following a single vehicle rollover in Borroloola yesterday, which claimed the life of a man in his 70s.
Superintendent Daniel Bacon from the Arnhem and Western Division said the vehicle rollover on the Carpentaria Highway, approximately 180km from the Stuart Highway turn-off, was reported to Police at around 4:30pm yesterday by a passer-by.
“Mataranka Police and Northern Traffic Operations Officers from Katherine are conducting investigations into the exact circumstances surrounding the incident,” Superintendent Bacon said.
“It appears the man was travelling west along the highway in a Toyota Prado when he lost control of the vehicle around a sweeping right-hand bend. The vehicle rolled several times and landed 30m from the road in scrubland.
“At this early stage of the investigation it appears excessive speed may be a factor.”
A file will be prepared for the Coroner.
The road toll for the same time last year stood at 35.
