Fatal Fire - Tiwi

Northern Territory Fire and Rescue Services, Police and St John Ambulance personnel have responded to a unit fire in Tiwi this morning.

Watch Commander, Senior Sergeant Mark Grieve, said Emergency Services responded to the call at about 7am after smoke was reported coming from a unit on Trower Road.

“On attendance Fire Officers and Police have entered the unit and found a 64 year-old male unconscious in the bedroom of the unit.

“Despite the best efforts of Paramedics and Fire Officers the man has tragically died at the scene.

“The cause of death is being investigated by the coroner and Police are not treating the fire as suspicious.

“I would like to thank all of the first responders for the courage and professionalism shown at the scene.”

Only minor damage was caused to the main living area of the unit.
