Fatal Crash - Tanami Road

Police

A 57 year-old female has died as a result of a single vehicle rollover on the Tanami Road, approximately 62 kilometres North West of Alice Springs.

Watch Commander, Senior Sergeant Peter Dash said preliminary investigations suggest the 80 series Toyota Landcruiser was travelling west on the single lane bitumen road at about 1:45 pm yesterday when the crash occurred.

“The Landcruiser was following another vehicle which has moved left to allow an oncoming car to pass, at this time the 20 year-old driver has lost control of his vehicle.

“The car travelling east has witnessed the rollover and the driver has rendered assistance.”

Senior Sergeant Dash said a number of passengers were ejected from the vehicle which rolled several times, including the woman who received fatal injuries.

“There were a total of ten people in the vehicle, six adults and four children.  The vehicle had seatbelts for five.

“At this time a 5 year-old child remains in a serious but stable condition in Alice Springs Hospital.  Three other adults remained in hospital overnight.”

Senior Sergeant Dash said Alcohol and speed do not appear to be contributing factors and Major Crash continues to investigate.

“The passengers who were not restrained have suffered the most serious injuries.”

The death takes the Territory Road Toll to 13.  The toll was also 13 at this time last year.
