Daly River – Flood Advice

Police

The Regional Controller of the Region 2 Counter Disaster Planning Committee advises that the river level in the Daly River catchment area is currently at 13.1m and slowly on the rise.

Regional Controller, Commander David Proctor said the latest flood advice from the Bureau of Meteorology predicts the water level is expected to continue rising above the moderate flood level (13.1m) but not exceed 13.5m by 8:00 am tomorrow.

The Region 2 Counter Disaster Planning Committee has been meeting regularly since the Easter weekend when the region experienced significant rainfall and has been managing the recent flooding at Beswick and preparing for the possibility of high water levels impacting on the Daly River Community.

“This is a whole of Government response and we are constantly monitoring and reassessing the situation. Additional evacuation plans are in place and will be activated if necessary,” said Commander Proctor.

“It is anticipated that the evacuation of vulnerable residents and those residing in low-lying areas to Woolianna School will take place this evening or tomorrow morning if required.

“Local residents should ensure they stay informed by attending community meetings and talking with Local Counter Disaster Committee representatives.

“While there is no need for alarm, members of the public do need to be alert, listen to ongoing advice, consider their options and make the necessary preparations to keep their families and their property safe.

“Anyone planning to evacuate if flood levels rise further, should ensure they have essential supplies such as medicines, food and bedding.

“Care should also be taken on all roads in the area. It is important the public remain vigilant regarding croc awareness, particularly with flooding and excess water about.
