Crash driver faces multiple charges

Police

A 19 year-old man remains in custody following a two car crash on Bloomfield Street in Alice Springs yesterday.

Sergeant Conan Robertson said Police will allege the man was under the influence of alcohol and was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

“Witnesses have stated the Holden Nova was swerving from side to side and travelling above the posted 60 kilometre per hour speed limit at about 9:45am before crashing into the car in front and forcing both vehicles off the road.

“The offender has been injured in the crash and was transported to the Alice Springs hospital for treatment.”

Sergeant Robertson said several witnesses remained at the scene and offered support to the young driver whose car was hit.

“Information from community members was very helpful to Police and ensured the offender was identified and the circumstances of the crash were known.”

Sergeant Robertson said the behaviour of the alleged offender was frightening.

“He has turned his car into a weapon through a combination of stupidity, intoxication and lack of respect for any other road user.

“He has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, drive in a dangerous manner, drive unlicensed, drive unregistered, drive uninsured, failing to wear a seatbelt and giving false information to Police.

“The young man has never held a drivers licence and it is highly likely he would not have been injured if he was wearing his seatbelt.”
