Detectives from the Serious Crime Squad are investigating the death of a 55-year-old man involved in an aircraft crash that occurred this morning in the Rural Area.

Detective Senior Sergeant Annette Cooper said the 55-year-old pilot was flying an ultralight aircraft when it crash in scrubland near Wetherby Road, in Girraween at around 7:45am.

“Police, Fire and Emergency Services attended the scene however the man passed away a short time later.

“A crime scene has been established, and the exact circumstances surrounding the crash are being investigated by NT Police and Recreational Aviation Australia.”

A report will now be prepared for the coroner.
