A 15-year-old male youth is to appear in the Katherine Youth Justice Court today in relation to an attempted sexual assault in Katherine.

Detective Senior Constable Suzanne Hollingsworth from the Northern Investigation Section said the incident occurred around 9:00pm on Tuesday night, in an unlit area on Katherine Terrace.

“It is alleged a 30-year-old woman was approached by a 15-year-old male near Shell Service Station who overpowered the victim, causing her to fall to the ground,” Detective Senior Constable Hollingsworth said.

“He allegedly assaulted her and attempted to sexually assault her prior to being interrupted by a member of the public who came to her aid. The youth ran from the scene and was located by Police a short time later.”

The youth was charged with aggravated assault and attempted sexual assault. He received bail and is to appear in court this afternoon.

“We thank members of the public for intervening and assisting Police with our enquiries, however, I urge anyone else who may have been in the area at the time, or who may have seen a youth acting suspiciously in the vicinity of Katherine Terrace, to contact Police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000,” Detective Senior Constable Hollingsworth said.
