Police

A 41-year-old woman remains in custody and is due to appear in court in Alice Springs on Friday after a fatal road crash last week.

The woman was the driver in the single vehicle crash, which occurred 151 kilometres south of Alice Springs on the Stuart Highway last Friday afternoon.

Major Crash Unit Alice Springs Detective Sergeant Michael Schumacher said the crash claimed the life of the passenger, a 71-year-old man, who was a well respected member of the wider Alice Springs region.

“Alcohol and seatbelts appear to have been issues in this tragic crash,” Detective Sergeant Schumacher said.

“I’d like to remind drivers and passengers that seatbelts save lives so please buckle up.”

Police charged the woman with drive a motor vehicle cause death, drive under the influence of alcohol and drive unlicensed.
