Warning for all Road Users – Alice Springs

Police

Police again urge all drivers to avoid flooded roads after two vehicles became stranded west of Alice Springs this afternoon.

Acting Senior Sergeant Dean Barrett said the two vehicles were travelling along Namatjira Drive and attempted to cross at Ellery Bighole.

“The vehicles, containing eight occupants in total, became stranded as the water rose up to the bonnet,” Acting Senior Sergeant Barrett said.

“Ntaria Police and local NT Fire and Rescue members have attended the location and removed three of the occupants, including a young child, and will remain at the location until the others have been recovered safely.

“I again urge road users and those heading into Alice Springs for the football game or for any other reason, to seriously reconsider travelling through flooded creeks or crossings. Even shallow water can be deceptively strong and can strand you and your family in just moments.

“I ask that everyone, even those in four wheel drives, check the water level before proceeding in your vehicles.

“There are three other important questions you should also ask yourself before attempting these types of crossings.

·        Is my vehicle capable;

·        Do I have the skills to make the crossing, and most importantly;

·        Do I really need to go there?

“If you have any doubts, don’t take the risk.”
