Police

A 46-year-old man who was arrested by Northern Territory Police under a New South Wales warrant for murder will appear in the Darwin Magistrates Court this morning.

Commander Richard Bryson said the arrest of the wanted man yesterday afternoon marked the end of a six day investigation and search operation by the NT Police.

“The wanted man was arrested by members of the Territory Response Group just after 3.00 pm in the primary search area where Police had been concentrating resources.

“Members of the TRG were conducting a sweep of the area of when the man was spotted.

“The man was armed at the time of the apprehension and was taken into custody without incident.

“The wanted man was hidden in an elaborate shelter that was so camouflaged you would have almost had to step on him to see him.

“I want to pay praise to those members from the Territory Response Group, the Dog Operations Unit, Police Air Wing, our general duties Police and traffic enforcement section who worked on the ground in harsh terrain around the clock.

“I would also like to thank members from Major Crime Squad, Serious Crime Squad and Forensic Science Section whose work has been invaluable during the operation

“This result could not have been achieved without the co-operation of residents in the rural area whose assistance and vital information received assisted Police in the large scale operation.

“We received over 500 calls from the public and 156 direct tasks were sent out to members on the ground for suspicious persons, movement and suspicious activity reports.

“We were always confident that every day and every piece of information would bring us closer to apprehending Mr Stenberg and that our operational tactics would prevail.

“This was an exercise in patience and I am very proud of all the members involved.
