A 36-year-old man remains in Police custody following a vehicle crash on Wickham Point Road last night.

Acting Superintendent Kerry Hoskins of the Darwin Metropolitan Command said the man came to the attention of Police whilst travelling down Vanderlin Drive in Wagaman at around 11:40pm.

“Police witnessed a Holden station wagon swerving and noticed a passenger throwing bottles out of the car window,” Acting Superintendent Hoskins said.

“Police used lights and sirens; however the vehicle failed to stop and fled down the Stuart Highway.

“A rear tyre on the Holden blew on Roystonea Avenue in Palmerston, however the driver continued at low speed through Rosebery and Moulden and across the bridge on Channel Island Road.

“The vehicle sideswiped two Police vehicles before it turned onto Wickham Point Road and crashed into a bollard at the security gate of the gas plant.

“The Holden came to an abrupt halt as it struck a stationary Police vehicle.”

Three passengers, a male aged 41 and two females at 24 and 35 were in the vehicle at the time.

The 36-year-old male driver and two female passengers were all taken to hospital and have since been discharged.

It is alleged the man was driving an unroadworthy vehicle whilst disqualified. It is believed both he and his passengers were intoxicated during the incident.

“This man took his life, his passenger’s lives and other road user’s lives into his own hands when he chose to get behind the wheel. It’s amazing no one received serious injuries,” Acting Superintendent Hoskins said.
