Update - Fatal Crash – Coconut Grove

Police

Major Crash Investigators continue to investigate the fatal crash which occurred in Coconut Grove late last night.

Detective Acting Senior Sergeant John Worrall from the Major Crash Investigation Section said a 35-year-old male driver died when his car collided with another car at around 10:40pm.

“Although it is still early in the investigation, it appears the Mazda Protégé, carrying six passengers, was travelling outbound along Bagot Road when it struck a Ford Fairlane which was turning right onto Osgood Road,” Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Worrall said.

“It is believed the 35-year-old failed to stop at a red light and died as a result of the crash.

“NT Fire and Rescue members used hydraulic cutting equipment to extract a number of the passengers, all of whom were conveyed to Royal Darwin Hospital with various injuries.

“The 29-year-old male driver of the Ford also received minor injuries while his 43-year-old female passenger suffered serious injuries and remains in Royal Darwin Hospital.

“The intersection was closed until early this morning but has been re-opened and traffic is now flowing freely.

“Initial indications are that speed and alcohol may also be factors, however investigations are ongoing.

"I’d again like to remind drivers of the need to accept responsibility not just for their own safety while on the road but that of their passengers and other road users as well."
