Two Stabbed - Katherine

Police

Katherine Detectives have charged two women in relation to two non-related stabbings in the town overnight.

About half-past-11 last night, Police were called to a unit in Bernhard Street after receiving a report that a 23-year-old man had been stabbed in the left thigh and calf.

“Initial investigations have revealed a 33-year-old woman armed herself with a steak knife and stabbed the man after a jealous argument.” Said Superintendent Brent Warren.

“She was arrested at the scene and the victim was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.”

Earlier about 7pm, Police and Ambulance crews attended a residence at Kalano community after a 39-year-old woman received a stab wound to her left upper arm.

“The woman’s 35-year-old sister was arrested at the scene. Again fortunately the injury while serious, was not life threatening.” Said Supt Warren.

“Both women have been charged with Aggravated Assault and have been bailed to appear before the Katherine Court of Summary Jurisdiction in February.”

“Both these incidents highlight the unfortunate correlation between alcohol abuse and violent offending, particularly in domestic relationships”.

“Police will continue to target domestic violence offending and members of the public are encouraged to take the first step and report this kind of offending when it occurs”.
