Two fatal crashes in two minutes - Darwin and Katherine

Police

The Territory road toll has risen to 18 after two separate fatal crashes in Palmerston and Katherine tonight.

Watch Commander Bob Harrison said Police received a report of a pedestrian being struck by a car on Elrundie Avenue in Palmerston at 7.06 pm.

“Initial investigations indicate that a Toyota Yaris was being driven along Elrundie Avenue towards Shell Durack when it struck a male pedestrian who was crossing the road near the Marlow Lagoon Recreation Park.

“The male pedestrian suffered extensive injuries and was rushed by St John Ambulance to the Royal Darwin Hospital in a critical condition.  He died a short time later.

“Minutes later, Police received a report that a Toyota Corolla stuck a male pedestrian at 7.07pm on Florina Road in Katherine. Sadly the man died at the scene as a result of his injuries.

“It is not known at this early stage if speed or alcohol contributed to the cause of the crash and investigations are continuing.

“Speed is not believed to have been a contributing factor in the crash in Palmerston however investigations are continuing.

“This is a tragic start to the Territory Day weekend,” said Watch Commander Harrison.

This now takes the Territory road toll to 18 compared to 11 for the same period last year.
