Territorians Celebrate with a Bang!

Police

Police and Fire and Rescue members were kept busy last night and early this morning with numerous firework related calls.

Chief Fire Officer Steve Rothwell of the Northern Territory Fire and Rescue Service said the Territory Communications Section received numerous calls with reports ranging from grass fires to noise complaints.

“From 6pm through to 11pm, Fire and Rescue members responded to more than 80 grass fires across the Territory, around 50 of those were in the Darwin, Palmerston and rural areas,” Chief Fire Officer Rothwell said.

“Four injuries were also reported and thankfully, from information we’ve received, they were all quite minor.

“It appears most people had a great time celebrating Territory Day, however I continue to urge those setting off crackers outside of the designated times to think twice about their actions. Not only is it extremely dangerous, you may incur significant penalties.

“Now Territory Day has come and gone, I urge anyone who may witness the use of fireworks to contact Police on 131 444 with an exact location and/or description of the offender.”
